TRAPPIST MONKS IN NL AND PH, ONE RULE

trappist monks and trappistine nuns belong to the monastic family following Christ according to the Rule of Saint Benedict. They have the deep desire to seek God in the community life of a monastery. There way of life:austerity, sincerity, silence, chastity(celibate life-style).The Trappist nickname is from a reform movement in France,17th century. The official name is Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance(O.C.S.O.). Bernard of Clervaux developed the Order. The other important contributor is Thomas Merton,1915-1968)from the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani,Kentucky,USA.

I said before, the atmosphere is silence, speaking is allowed :functional, spiritual, spontaneous during special occasions. The spirit of Christ calls the monks to a life of simplicity, hiddenness, work, prayer, service, hospitality.

therefore you will find them outside the city in rural areas to make an income.
two examples:
Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in The Netherlands(Holland,NL) and Abbey of Our Lady of New Helfta/O.L.P. in The Philippines,resp.1884 and 1972 founded.

The koningshoeven NL,(meaning the Kings farmhouses)owns the only Dutch Trappist brewery, with the famous La Trappe beer ( i the USA/Canada called:Koningshoeven Trappist Ale.)

The Guimaras based Abbey ,PH, produces rice, vegetables, jam, mango slices, guava, coconut, pineapple, bread, cookies. It is the only men''s monastery of the Order in the PH.
